yet been. While in the area I went to visit friends in Northern Massachusetts,
one of them being Nathan Hansen. Nathan and I went to Virginia Commonwealth
University where he earned his MFA in Crafts and Material Studies. His focus
was woodworking making kinetic sculptures. His sculptures raise questions about
the value of physical activity through mechanisms that require a specific
amount of interaction from the view/user. His pieces have familiar visual
references of machines from our past and present. Nathan works as the
Instructional Support and Wood Shop Technician at the University of New
Hampshire. This position at UNH is more than just good experience as a job.
One of the perks of his job is being able to use the wood shop whenever he
wants to work on his pieces in addition to learning from the artists around
him. The second day I was visiting, I went to work with Nathan to have a
look at the shop and the piece that he is currently working on. During the
day I met some of the students and teachers. I ended up being asked to come
back to show images of my work and talk about my trip to Martha's Vineyard
to the Beginning and Advanced woodworking classes. It turned out very nice.
After showing my work, I made the rounds talking to students about their
projects that are due soon. It was nice to be back in a community of
artists, at least for the short time I was there.
Below is a sample of some of Nathan's Work.
