Gannon & Benjamin Week 1-2

I've been in Marthas Vineyard for a little over two weeks now. This trip is a part of my proposal for a Windgate Fellowship that I recieved in 2009, I have come to work with traditional wooden boat builders Gannnon & Benjamin. With minimal tools and a heap of skill and craftsmanship they make some of the best wooden boats in the country. I wanted to come work by there side to better understand how the complex hull shapes are made. So far the experience has been very educational and enjoyable.

My first week here I did not work at the boatyard, instead I explored the island to familiarize myself with the area. The island is about 10 by 25 miles so it doesnt take too long to figure out your way around but it is filled with things to do and see, even in the winter off-season.
The photos of the hatch to the cabin is one of my projects im working on, this is a little sailboat that G & B made about 30 years ago that is back for a restore. The rails that the cabin hatch slides in were in bad shape so I'm remaking them. Sounds simple enough, but nothing on a boat is straight or square. These are very expensiveboats undergoing expensive repairs, so the work has to be pefect.

I'll get into more detail with the next posts, for now, here's some pictures.
